Is Manual Lift Or Powered Lift Better For Roof Vent Fan In Camper Van Conversion Off-Grid?

Published 02/25/2026

Question:

We’re doing a van conversion and want something simple and reliable. Is the manual lift design better long term than the powered lid models?

Hey Chris!

If simplicity and fewer electronics are your priority, the manual lift design definitely checks that box. I'd check out the MaxxAir Pivot fan models like # MA36WV smoked lid or the # MA96WV white lid.

You manually open the lid and pivot the fan for intake or exhaust, but the airflow performance (400 CFM, four speeds, 2.5-amp draw) is still solid for a van build. Fewer motors and sensors can mean fewer long-term failure points. And at that low of a power draw, it could run for a day or two on just a single 12v battery.

I’d recommend also adding a low-profile FanMate cover - white # MA00-955001 or smoked # MA00-955003 - so you can keep air moving in rainy weather without having to constantly adjust the lid. Usually you'd need to manually close these lids when it starts to rain, so I'd go this route.

How tight is your roof layout - are you working around solar panels or keeping this centered? That could help determine what setup is best for you.
