RV AC With Cooling and Heat for a Goosneck Trailer That Does Not Have An AC

Updated 02/28/2026 | Published 02/21/2026

Question:

Hi, I was looking to buy a A/C unit with heat for my enclosed gooseneck trailer. It does not have an existing unit but we are capable to install it ourselves. I am apart of the Iowa State Formula SAE team and I just needed help on deciding which unit would be best for my situation. I have heard you guys have very good customer service and was wondering if someone could direct me in the right direction.

Hey, Nicholas!

First I'd like to say that you helped me learn something new today. I look up your team and watched the promo video on your universities website. Look like a lot of fun! I watch Formula 1 with my dad from time to time but hadn't hear of Formula SAE till today.

Now back to your question. Since there isn't anything there right now It would be best to stick a set up and unit that doesn't need ducting. I'm not sure how much space you need to cool or heat but I'd definitely recommend going with a 15k BTu. The GE Appliances Low-Profile RV AC with heat pump part # GE98RR. The typical temp reduction for units in this Btu rating is 15 to 25 degrees.

I don't have an AC system that is cool and heat that is a multi zone, 2 ACs one thermostat, but you can install more than one of the GE unit if you want one at each end of the trailer.

How large is the gooseneck trailer that you're working on?

Sorry accidentally posted that reply early. Thank you so much for investing your own outside time in researching our organization. I personally have heard a lot of great reviews about etrailer, and it is only living up to that standard. I can't find your email, but we would love to explore a partnership in which etrailer could support the SAE International Student Chapter's requirement for an A/C unit either as a sponsorship or at a discounted rate. But back to the AC unit, I agree we would need 15k BTu for our specific scenario, and I think the unit you recommended should work best for us. I believe the trailer is 32 feet and standard height, and we would only need one unit. After talking with other members, we might consider having it installed by one of your local, trusted dealers. We would need the hole cut out, wiring run to the unit, and possibly a plug for the generator to hook up to. Thank you so much for the help.

@NicholasC Always happy to help out! This unit will be great for that size of trailer. Is it just the AC that you and your team are adding or are there other plans for the trailer as well? Also, we do have a dealer locator as well. It wont show all the installers in your area but will show the ones that we deal with personally. Just in case you needed more options for installers, the link is below!
