Trailer Hitch and 4-Bike Platform Rack Recommendation for 2004 Volkswagen Touareg

Updated 07/07/2014 | Published 07/03/2014

Question:

A couple of questions for you. One, I am interested in 2inch hitch for a 2004 VW Touareg to transport a couple of kids bikes, one is 20-inch and one 24-inch I live in St Louis. Do you do installations and what is the cost? Second. do you have any thoughts about Thule platform hitch racks. Currently we put 2 bikes on a roof rack but if/when we buy a new SUV, would like to be able to expand and put all 4 bikes on the rack. Thank you.

We do offer several 2-inch Class III hitches for your 2004 Volkswagen Touareg and all can be seen on the link provided. The most popular among them is the Curt # 13220. Please note that the hitch you referenced, part # C13116, is not a fit for your 2004 model year.

The Curt hitch # 13220 offers a substantial 600-lb tongue weight capacity, which is plenty for even a 4-bike platform carrier. I have linked an installation video for your review. Do please note that Curt requires you to use a stabilizing strap # 18050 with your bike rack (or any other non-wheeled load) in order to retain your hitch's warranty coverage.

I have linked you to our main page for all Class III-compatible 4-bike platform bike carriers, including racks from Thule, Kuat and others. You can use the filters in the left-hand margin to narrow the product results based on brand, type of cradle used and whether locks are required.

The Thule T2 Pro XTR f 4-bike # TH69TX which can switch between 2 and 4 bikes as needed. It is an excellent USA-made carrier that is covered by Thule's lifetime warranty. It comes complete with locks for the rack itself and for your loaded bikes. A video is linked for your reference.

I have also linked an article that reviews how to measure your hitch and vehicle to confirm compatibility with a hitch-mount carrier.

We do offer hitch installation in our Wentzville, Missouri location.
