Can I Use a 7-Way to 12 Volt Power Adapter to Run a Cooler Off of an In Bed 7-Way While Towing?

Updated 02/17/2026 | Published 02/10/2026

Question:

Have a 21 F350, can I use the adaptor on the 7 pin inside the bed to run a cooler while a travel trailer is hooked up to the 7 pin on the bumper?

Hey Joe, welcome back! How much power draw does your cooler have? The circuits that power your 7-ways are often fused with a 30 amp fuse/relay. The factory and aftermarket options like item # C57010 are ran off of the same circuit. You'll want to make sure you don't overload that circuit and blow the fuse when using the Pollak 7-Way to 12 Volt Power Outlet Adapter item # PK11896.

Another option would be to install the Furrion 12 Volt Socket with Waterproof Cap item # FR36XD in the bed of your truck. You can use a few feet of the 10 Gauge Wire item # 10-1-1 and a 20 Amp Circuit Breaker item # PK54220 to connect directly to your battery.

What kind of cooler do you have?

@JoeD You're welcome! You're only pulling an additional 4ish amps with your cooler so you should be good using the item # PK11896 if your 12v trailer connector is on a 30 amp fuse. The issue we've ran into with Ford's "Smart Tow" package is the computer only sends voltage to the 12v circuit if your truck's in gear. So it's not too reliable for running a cooler if you're making long stops.

I can’t speak to your F350 but my ‘19 Silverado 3500HD has a 40 amp fuse on the aux battery. Depending on what you’re running in the trailer at the same time, it shouldn’t be a problem. I bought my 7way/12v connector to run a portable air compressor from the rear bumper.

I use the adapter in several ways. Relative to your question Joe I use the adapter to charge a power station while driving which is powering a 12 volt cooler. The power station is to keep the cooler going when making long stops so not to drain the truck battery. The power station has pass through charging of course.

@Tom Thanks Tom, quick question for clarity, are you pulling a travel trailer plugged in to the bumper 7 pin while running your charger/cooler setup?

Hey Joe No trailer. have a 2025 Frontier pro 4x. There is no 12V outlet in the truck bed. So I improvised. From the bumper 7 pin with the adapter I run a charging cord to a BLUETTI - trick it into thinking it’s charging via solar- and then I plug the cooler into the BLUETTI. The BLUETTI has pass through charging. When I stop the BLUETTI continues charging the cooler and I just unplug the BLUETTI from the adapter. In this way I don’t drain the truck battery since the 7 pin is always powered. Crazy but it works for me. The truck bed has an AC plug but like most trucks the inverter is modified sine wave so I don’t trust it to run the cooler directly. Worried about the cooler electronics.

@Tom thanks Tom, my situation is a little different, have 2 7 pin connections on the truck both run on the same circuit. One on the bumper and one in the bed for towing a fifth wheel, trying to figure out the impact of connecting a cooler or pass through power station/cooler on the bed connection while having the travel trailer connected to the bumper connection.
