What Flat Tow Braking System Should I Get For My 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Toad

Updated 02/02/2026 | Published 01/27/2026

Question:

I am looking at a 2022 Chevrolet Colorado as a TOAD. The Owners Manual says to disconnect the negative battery cable when towing. Which braking system would be compatible with this?

Hey, Alex.

The basic answer is that you can use any of the braking systems we offer that are compatible with your RV’s brake setup. I’ll go a little more in depth below.

For a fully integrated system, I’d strongly recommend the Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo Braking System part # DM86VR . All of the components for this system will be out of sight once installed, including the main box, which can be mounted anywhere as long as it’s away from heat and any moving parts under the hood. It’s also proportional, so it knows how much braking power it needs to apply. Once wired in, it will pull power from your battery. To keep your battery charged while you’re flat towing, you’ll also want the charge line kit part # RM-156-25.

I see that you were looking at the Roadmaster InvisiBrake kit part # RM-8700. This system is not my favorite, especially after helping with an install alongside one of our installers. The box is bulky and has to be mounted to the floor under the driver’s seat. You would need to be very mindful when adjusting or moving the driver’s seat so you don’t accidentally crush the box. The InvisiBrake also needs to be preset to the brake sensitivity you want before heading out. This means that if it’s set to a medium braking power, it will apply the same amount of braking regardless of how you’re braking in the RV. It also draws power from your battery, so you would need the charge line kit for this system as well.

Both of these systems are compatible with hydraulic brakes. That’s the most common type of brake, so I’m assuming that’s what you have. If that assumption is wrong, just let me know!

Since your battery needs to be disconnected when flat towing, you will also need a battery disconnect. There are different options depending on whether you have a diesel or gas model.

If you’d like, I can put together a complete list of everything you would need to flat tow your Colorado. Do you already have some parts picked out, like a base plate or tow bar you’re interested in?

Sorry but I’m confused by your reply. At one point you said the Demco Stay N Play unit uses power from the battery, ( even has charging capability $, but it can’t if the battery is disconnected as you mention further on. I’m still looking for a TOAD, not locked in to the Colorado. Maybe a MINI might work better. Can you see I’m all over the place with this one?

@AlexR The Invisibrake works great in our 2012 Mini Cooper S. Box goes on the floor of the cargo area and the servo under the carpet behind the driver's seat. Had to add a brake light switch as the Mini used a different brake light circuitry. As far as setting the brakes to operate at the same braking effort whenever applied; it really doesn't matter because the car is so light to begin with. We have some pics of the install but not much.

@AlexR All braking systems for flat towing will be pull power from the battery on the vehicle. To prevent your battery from draining you will need the charge line kit that I mentioned above. This will keep your battery charged while flat towing.

@GwendolynY I might be missing something, but I mentioned the owners manual for the Colorado says you have to disconnect the battery. My original question was which system will work given those circumstances?
