How to Measure Trailer Wheel Width

Updated 02/10/2026 | Published 01/23/2026

Question:

Hello. I have a horse trailer. I need to replace one of the wheels. Tire size is 205/75R15. The wheel is white, with 6 lug nuts and 10 round holes on it. I do see three wheels on your website that look identical, but I’m not sure if I need a 5 1/2 or 6 inch wide wheel. How do I measure that distance? From the inside to inside, or from the outside surface to the outside surface? Thank you in advance

Hey Robert! The wheel width is measured bead seat to bead seat, which will be on the inside. See the video I attached further down on this page which explains exactly how to measure starting at the 50 second mark. The Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel # AM20552 is the correct replacement if you have a 6" measurement.

Where are you hauling your horses next?

Hey Robert, how did things go with measuring the width on your horse trailer wheel? Did the 6-inch Dexstar wheel end up being the right fit for your setup? Your update could make it easier for others replacing similar wheels.
