Will Weigh Safe Weight Distribution System Help with Sway Over 50 mph

Updated 12/02/2025 | Published 11/29/2025

Question:

Would this work with an adjustable height channel hitch? I have a Hull Porter 20foot tilt flatbed that is pulled usually behind a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 with Bradford 4box bed 2.5inch receiver 24,000 Tow/1,800 hitch weight. Hull Porter shut down when the owner retired so I have no one to ask there. Trailer stickers show a max weight of cargo at 11,330, coupler 2,100. The towed cargo weight varies between nearly empty and probably maxed out. This trailer pulls straight as an arrow until loaded up, then its hang on over 50mph. My other question is could I then use my daily driver 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 2inch receiver to pull lighter loads with it? I assume I would either need to purchase this in a 2inch and use a sleeve for the 2500, or purchasing a second 2inch receiver mount if even available separately for the 1500.

Hey Roy, as long as the adjustable height channel hitch is rated for use with a weight distribution system the Weigh Safe WD system part # WS99MR would work just fine. I don't have a way to check what you have but assuming it's really heavy duty I would assume its fine.

This could also be used with you Sierra that has a 2 inch hitch as well but you would need to swap out the shank like with the # WS39RR.

Now you said the trailer is fine till it's loaded and then it sways bad over 50 mph. This to me says you don't have enough tongue weight relative to the amount the trailer weighs and addressing that is the real solution. If you can get the tongue weight to be between 10 and 15 percent of total trailer weight the sway will stop. So if you can move the cargo forward in the trailer that will be the solution.
