Question:

Will the TowSmart hitch block the hands-free liftgate on my 2025 Outback Onyx?

Good question, Trevor - the TowSmart # TS34ZR doesn’t interfere with your liftgate sensors. The receiver sits just under the bumper, and Subaru places those sensors off to the sides, so you’ll still be able to use the hands-free feature as normal. Sometimes we've seen where you have to kick at a different angle compared to before the hitch was installed, but that's not always the case.

Your Onyx trim comes with the 2.4L turbo engine, so you can tow up to 3,500 lbs, which pairs nicely with this hitch’s 4,500-lb rating; just be sure not to exceed the limits of the vehicle. If you plan on towing, just add the 4-way wiring harness # 118467 and ball mount kit # 989891 to complete your setup.

Are you mainly planning to use it for a small trailer, or for something like a bike rack or cargo rack?

If I’m mainly using this for a bike rack, is the 2" receiver overkill, or is that the best way to go for the Outback?

@Hannah Honestly, the 2" receiver is the better way to go for just about any vehicle that has one of those sizes available in our fit guide. Most 3 or 4 bike racks (especially platform racks and anything rated for e-bikes) are designed around a 2" hitch because it gives you a sturdier connection with less movement. And even with an adapter to convert from 1-1/4" to 2", you'll lose weight capacity and still may not be compatible with the bike racks you want to use. What type of bikes do you have? And do you have a bike rack already? If not, I'd go with something like the Hollywood Racks Destination 4 bike rack # HR4000, unless you have ebikes, then I can find something else for you!
