What RV Roof Vent Lid Material Would Hold Up Best Over Time

Updated 11/04/2025 | Published 11/03/2025

Question:

Hi, I have a cargo trailer that is very rarely moved, like years. I’ve found that the plastic domed roof vent has broken. In thinking about it, I guess it’s been a while since I replaced the original. I’m thinking that one of the galvanized ones would be a good replacement. Likely will last longer than another plastic one. Am I thinking right or is there a side I’m not seeing?

Hey Chip, yes I agree the metal lid of the Ventline Ventadome part # V2110SP-24 is going to hold up the best over time which would mean you wouldn't have to worry about replacing the lid for a very long time. How old is the trailer?

2016, & I’ve replaced the vent once. I forget how long ago that was. It was an Amazon. While reading the descriptions, I guess a plastic one would be able to let in some light, but the trade off with the metal would be not to have to worry about it breaking again so much.

@ChipH Can you live without the light being let in?

@JamesonC I think I could probably learn to if it would mean that I won’t have to worry about constantly checking plastic for breakage.
