Why Would Ram Trailer Jack Only Work When Lowering But Not Raising

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 10/26/2025

Question:

I have a Ram 3500 Power Tongue jack for my 36 foot travel trailer. The lights work fine, and the power lets it lower with no problems. However, recently raising it has been a problem with the electric switch and I need to manually raise it. What could the problem be?

Hey Wayne, the first thing I would check is the condition of the battery that powers the jack as well as the wiring connections made to it. Lifting a jack is a lot harder than lowering so if there is an issue with the power or wiring it will show up there first. Does it sound like it wants to work but its not or does the switch not make any noise when lifting? It is also possible that the switch is bad too.

For a Ram jack the correct replacement power switch is the part # EJ-3520-PSW if you find that is the issue.

It doesn't make any noise other then the click on the switch. I will check the battery as you suggested first and then if needed order the switch. Thank you for the help. You have any videos on changing out the ram switch?

@WayneB Sounds good! We don't have any videos on the install of the switch at this time but it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out once you get the housing off. The switch basically just pops into the housing and the spade connectors connect directly to it. If you get stuck just let us know. I would take a picture of where the wires run to on the back of the current switch just in case you lose track of where it all needs to go so you can use it as a reference.
