What Is The Difference Between Curt Helux Pin Box With Black Spring Vs. Orange Spring?

Updated 11/13/2025 | Published 10/15/2025

Question:

I have a Jayco Eagle 355mbqs with about 12800 dry and a 2400 pin weight that is 18. Now with my trailer loaded with about 2000lbs of gear I estimate Im around 3100 to 3400 pin weight. I bought the curt helix pin box that is 4k pin and 24000 overall. Now my next door neighbor has the exact one, but his spring is orange. I checked and his is 4000pin and 24000 overall so Im surprised and want to know if Ive purchased the wrong one? So you know what the difference is? I have a 3775 BandW slider hitch and its great. I want to ask if Im going to be okay with this black spring model?? My GVWR is 15200 just so you know. Thank you so much. I attached a picture of the receipt as it just arrived today and I want to make sure this hitch will work for me and is safe or if I should have the orange one.

Hello Lee, thanks for reaching out. It sounds to me like you have the correct pin box for your camper. It sounds like you did your homework and calculated your pin weight correctly, and the 4K Helux Pin Box # C65MJ would be exactly correct for 3,100-3,400 lb pin weight.

For the Helux pin box, the orange spring indicates a factory pin box, and the black spring is aftermarket. There would be no physical differences aside from the color of the spring. You are totally fine to stick with the black spring model. No cause for concern at all.

Hey Lee, how did things turn out with the Curt Helux pin box and the black spring model on your Jayco Eagle? Did it handle your loaded pin weight the way you expected? Your update could make it easier for others comparing the two spring versions.
