Is Timbren Or SumoSprings The Better Option For Occasional Towing?

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 09/25/2025

Question:

I have a 2022 Ram 2500 Tradesman 4x2 that is actually my daily driver most of the time. I do occasionally tow a 11000lbs Flagstaff Travel Trailer with a tongue weight of about 1400lbs. Some trips are less than 200 miles, others are closer to 500 along the rough I95 corridor in VA, NC, SC area. I had to go to the ProPride P3 hitch to reduce trailer sway but am looking for a solution to improve overall ride quality when towing. The Porpoising over bridges and the motions induced driving over irregular pavement in construction zones with jersey walls dangerously close to my trailer can be stressful, along with the occasional push/pull of certain vehicles as they pass me. My truck is stock. Is there a preference between the Timbren and SumoSprings? Ideally, I would like improved safe handling and tow comfort without causing undue bouncing to hurt my wifes back!

Hi Paul!

Since you said occasional towing, I am going to steer you away from the Timbren option. They can be pretty rough and you will definitely feel it when you are not towing. If you had a constant load, it would have been an option, but I don't think you will be happy with them.

The SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs - Rear Axle # SSR-312-54 will be the much better choice. Yes, it does have a lower capacity than the Timbrens, but I believe they are much better suited to your needs. They will give support when needed, but won't mess up you ride nearly as much. You will know they are there when you hit hard bumps, but it won't be jarring.

Have you thought about upgrading or adding a rear sway bar? I know the ones that Ram uses aren't the best, so it may be something to look into. Just be warned, they are on the expensive side. I have a couple listed below if you wanted to take a gander at them.

Roadmaster Rear Anti-Sway Bar - 1-1/2" Diameter # RM73FR (no factory sway bar)
Roadmaster Rear Anti-Sway Bar - 1-1/2" Diameter # RM34GR (replaces factory sway bar)

Thank you so much for your helpful reply! A further question involves the yellow SumoSpring rated for 2800# vs the black spring rated at 1500#. Are we choosing based upon my truck's payload capacity or the tt tongue weight? I noticed they both cost the same. Do you think I would feel a difference between the two? Thanks for your expertise!

@PaulE Kind of both actually. The black 1,500 pound # SSR-312-47 will definitely work, but they are fairly soft. With the tongue weight of your travel trailer being 1,400 pounds, I think they may a little on the soft side. Yes, that does look to match pretty closely, but anything in your bed is also counted as tongue weight. If your bed is typically empty when towing, then they will work perfectly fine. If you do have stuff in your bed, I think the yellow 2,800 pound # SSR-312-54 will be the better option.
