Troubleshooting Thule Helium Platform XT With Wobble at the Hinge Point

Updated 09/30/2025 | Published 09/09/2025

Question:

My Thule Helium rack has a wobble that originates in the first "hinge point" coming out of the stinger. It is a large part of the rack that is encased in black plastic. Wondering if I should take this apart (requiring removing the trays) to be able to tighten it. Thank you!

Hey Tom!

The bolt in the middle of the silver track on your Thule Helium Platform XT # TH53GC and the one to the right of it should be checked every once in a while to see how tight they are. You should just need to snug those up a bit and you'll be all good!

Let me know if this works out for you or not, I'd love to make sure you're able to use your bike rack!

Hey Tom, did snugging up the bolts on your Thule Helium rack help with the wobble issue? I'm asking because your experience could really help others with similar bike rack concerns.

@JonG hi Jon, I wish I could say that it did help, but I ended up disassembling the entire mechanism. This included the spring and Rod that controls the handle that lowers and raises the three levels of the rack. It was very, very difficult to put back together. I actually didn’t do a good job and there is still a piece rolling around in there. I feel like I need to just scrap this rack and get something new.

@TomL If you're really wanting to scrap it I'd be more than happy to help you find an alternative! What drew you to the Thule Helium platform rack?
