Troubleshooting CA-5196-B Sleeve-Lock Trailer Coupler That Only Opens With Screwdriver Prying
Updated 08/26/2025 | Published 08/25/2025 >
Question:
I have a CA-5196-B hitch. The spring is good and has been replaced. The hitch will not open without using a screwdriver to pry it open. Do you have any suggestions?

Hey Jason, sorry you're having trouble with the Sleeve-Lock A-Frame Trailer Coupler # CA-5196-B.
Is the collar seizing or do you think it's the actual locking clamp mechanism on the ball itself? Have you tried spraying some penetrating oil like WD40 or PB Blaster in there and let is soak a few minutes then try to open and close it a few times with the lever? I would try that and see what happens. Likely there is some surface rust or crud built up. You could also take a wire brush to clean it up and hose it down then dry it and spray some more oil on it to lubricate it.
If something is actually damaged then you'd need a new coupler unfortunately.
