How Does Lippert ABS Trailer Brakes Get Wired And Programmed On Trailer With Anti Lock Brakes?

Published 08/12/2025

Question:

Do the Lippert ABS brake assemblies need to be programmed or professionally wired? I’m planning to install them myself on a utility trailer.

Derek, great question, and you're definitely not alone in wondering this. The good news is, there’s no special programming required for the # LC73PX brake assemblies. They’re electric drum brakes, so they wire up just like any standard setup: one wire goes to your trailer’s brake circuit usually blue, and the other to a clean ground on the trailer frame. Then the ABS connector gets plugged into the ABS Module as seen in the attached pics. The ABS Module is only available from Lippert at this time.

What makes these assemblies different is the built-in holes that prep it for the ABS sensor, which communicates with Lippert’s ABS-equipped hub. That sensor is internal, already integrated into the brake backing plate. It works passively through the hubs magnetic ring.

If you're used to standard electric brakes, you’ll find the install process nearly identical bolt the assemblies to your 4-bolt flange, connect the two brake wires either one can be ground, and you’re good to go. Just make sure you’re pairing these with Lippert ABS hubs like # LC44PX or # LC24PX, since the ABS sensor won’t function with standard drums.

Planning to wire this into an existing trailer harness that was using ABS brakes already? I can help walk you through the wiring layout if you need it.
