Troubleshooting Weak Trailer Brakes
Updated 08/15/2025 | Published 07/27/2025 >
Question:
Hi, I have a small tear camper with brakes that arent working. Ive confirmed its not the tow vehicle and there is power and ground going to the brakes but, when power is applied, nothing happens. I suspect its possibly the magnets although I find it odd both would go bad at the same time. The brakes felt weak last year so I suppose its possible only one was functioning. Do you have any suggestions on what else to check or does the magnet seem like a likely culprit? If so, would you have a replacement to recommend Id need two. The axle is a Dexter L/N 122521602 and the brake has a sticker that says 023-048-00. Please let me know if you need any other information. Thanks, Kyle

Hey Kyle, with as rare as magnet failure is I would be surprised if both of your magnets failed at the exact same time. Since both are not working well that makes me think the problem is something both of the magnets have in common. This is almost always the ground circuit. I know you checked the wiring but did you check the pins on the 7-way for corrosion? If there's corrosion there I would try hitting them with sandpaper.

Hey Kyle, did you get a chance to check the pins on the 7-way for corrosion like I suggested? I'm curious if that helped solve the issue with your trailer brakes. Let me know how it goes, as it could help others facing a similar problem!
