Best Way To Keep The Back Of A Trailer From Dragging On A Driveway

Updated 08/15/2025 | Published 07/19/2025

Question:

Hi, I was wondering what the best way to get extra ground clearance on my 2017 aspen trail 2750bhs would be. Reason being is that pulling in and out of my driveway the bumper and spare tire drag. I did put removable rear jacks on but then now it hits the bumper and almost ripped off my spare tire. Thank you in advance

There are a couple ways of going about lifting a trailer, Jeremy.

You could cut off your old hangers and weld on new taller ones, like the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double Eye Springs - 3-1/4" Tall Front/Center/Rear # APT5. The amount of lift will depend on how much taller the new hangers are compared to your old ones. This will be the most difficult way to lift a trailer.

The easier way would be to do an axle flip with the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit 2-3/8" Axle # K71-384-00 or 3" Axle # K71-385-00. This option will lift the trailer as high as the axle's diameter and requires no welding. Just unbolting you axle and bolting it back on the underside of the springs. However, if your springs are already over your axle, this one is kind of moot. And my kind of, I mean it is.

Have you thought about adding skid wheels to your bumper or frame instead? Something like the Ultra-Fab Steel Jumbo Roller for Trailers and RVs - Weld On - 2-1/2" Wide x 3" Tall # UF48-979023 can be attached wherever you need and would be a quick and relatively easy way to keep from dragging.

Hey Jeremy, did you get a chance to try any of the suggestions for lifting your trailer? I'm curious to know if adding skid wheels or doing an axle flip helped with your driveway issue. Your experience could really help others facing the same problem!
