How Easy is it To Replace the Factory Brake Controller on a 2016 Ram 2500?

Updated 08/07/2025 | Published 07/13/2025

Question:

Ive got a 2016 Ram 2500 with an OEM integrated brake controller that I find does very little to actually slow down my 12k trailer. Looking at getting the P2. Is it difficult to swap from the OEM one to the aftermarket P2?

Hey Brent! No, the factory brake controller on your 2016 Ram 2500 is pretty easy to swap out with one like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 item # 90885. You'll need to remove the dash panel around your factory controller, pull the unit out of the dash, and unplug the connector from the rear, as shown in the picture below.

You'll want to purchase the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness item # TK78HR though. This kit comes with a plug and play adapter that inserts directly into the plug you disconnect from your factory controller.

Please note you will need to take your Ram to the dealer to have the computer re-flashed, because once the factory controller is unplugged, you'll get a warning message on the dash display and the controller might not work correctly until the computer is re-flashed. I have no way around this.

What kind of trailer are you pulling?

Hey Brent, how did the installation of the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 go on your Ram? Did it help with slowing down your 12k trailer? I'm curious to know because it could really help others in a similar situation.
