Replacement Tires for Harbor Freight 4x8 Trailer

Updated 07/10/2025 | Published 07/04/2025

Question:

I have a Harbor Freight 4x8 Trailer....it currently has 12 x 4.80 Tires on it and you cannot really get upto the Speed I need I need for Interstate use. I think the MAX Speed it wants you to stay around is 45 you might be safe at 55 I need some tires that will get the speed upto 80 or 85 IF Needed Higher Speed will be even better for passing. IF needed I will also buy Wider Rims for Wider Ratio Tires I will be hauling Mainly Camping Supplies like Tents,Sleeping Bags, Air Beds or Folding 1 Person Cots Might Put a Trucktop Tent on it with Ladder Racks Bolted to the Trailer Frame, Generator and Propane Tanks for Cooking,Portable Water Heater etc. 4 Lug Rims is what the Tires will be Mounted to.

Hi Jeff; the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire # TT48012C will fit the Dexstar Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel # AM20122 you ordered. This is the same tire size you have now so clearance isn't an issue. It also has the M speed rating for 81 mph. I don't think you're going to find anything that is rated higher in the smaller size. Keep in mind, the trailer itself might not be rated that high. Even if you switch to higher rated tires you may be limited by the max speed of that trailer.

A 145/70 R12 should work? Might be a Smidgen or a Tad Wider?? Or narrower ( I think Wider than narrower or at least the same size as you recommended for the Rim/Wheel....what do you recommend for Anti Theft thinking of going thru the Wheel / Rims with a Hardened Chain and Lock or some kind of Rod with Locks. OR is there some kind of Slip over for the Tongue and Hitch because there is Three Bolts and Nuts that can be backed off IF they go that Route to try and Steal the Trailer....I will probably have a GPS Tracker activated that updates about every 2 Minutes anyway. IF I go that route?

@Jeff yeah they will be a little wider, it really depends on your clearance. If there wasn't a radial option for the 4.80-12 size I would definitely say go that route but there won't be a major advantage over the # TT48012C. You can use a wheel lock like # TMX75FR along with a coupler lock # TS84FR if security is a major concern.
