Should I Use the Demco Recon in My Flatbed Truck, a Gooseneck Adapter on My 5th Wheel, or B&W?

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 05/11/2025

Question:

I have a 13,000 pound fifth wheel and two trucks. I traded my f250 to a gmc 2500 at4 so my b and w hitch doesn’t fit. I also have a 2016 ram 3500 flatbed. I’m considering using it to pull the camper. Is it better to get a gooseneck adapter or I also saw a demco hitch that will hook to a recessed ball in the flatbed? Thank you

Hello Brian,

I recommend going with the Demco Recon Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter for Recessed Ball - Single Jaw - 21,000 lbs # DM8550046, if you already have a gooseneck ball installed in your 2016 Ram 3500 flatbed. This option will provide significantly better ride quality compared to a standard gooseneck adapter, and it's specifically designed for use with recessed ball setups on flatbed trucks.

However, if you do not currently have a gooseneck ball and you already had a B&W Companion hitch setup, the best route would be to install the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch for Flatbed Trucks - 30,000 lbs # BWGNRK1500. You can then use the Replacement Base for B&W Companion Flatbed 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - 25,000 lbs # BWRVB3055 with your existing Companion head assembly. Just note that this setup only works if you have the Companion head, the Patriot head is not compatible with the Companion base.

Also, if you decide that you want to tow with your new GMC, let me know the year, bed size, if it came with the OEM Prep Package, and if you have the Patriot or the Companion so I can get find you the right base.

We try to only carry great products, but when it comes to 5th wheel hitches in my opinion B&W is the BEST! Since you already experienced the ride quality with a B&W, I would hate for you to get a different brand and be disappointed.

Any big trips coming up? If so, where are you headed?

Hey Brian, Did you decide to go with the Demco hitch for your Ram flatbed, or did you opt for the B&W setup instead? I'm curious because your experience could really help others in a similar situation.
