Is 1" of Clearance Between 235/80R16 Tires and 2017 Sundowner Fenders a Problem?

Updated 10/22/2025 | Published 03/27/2025

Question:

just bought a 2017 sundowner toy hauler 28foot on the floor- has a st 235/80 R16 tires on it- cheap tires that were just put on after the previous owner had a blowout with some good Good Year tires- but there is only 1inch of clearance between top of the tire and fender. Is this probably what caused the blowout? Can I put a solid shorter tire on or should I block the axles?

Hey Kelley, thanks for reaching out!

Yes, you'll want to change something up. We recommend having around 4" of clearance above the tire to account for suspension flex, so since you only have 1" that's probably why the previous owner had a blowout.

What is the GVWR of your toy hauler, and what is the bolt pattern on your wheels? I can definitely recommend some smaller tires, or you can install the Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-385-00 for 3" axles if your axle is currently under your leaf springs, to raise your trailer equivalent to the diameter of your axle and the height of your leaf spring stack.

Let me know which way you'd like to go!

Hey Kelley, what did you end up doing with your toy hauler—did you go with smaller tires or try the over-under conversion kit to get more clearance? Your results could really help others dealing with the same tight fender space.
