Would Longer Trailer Suspension Shackles Allow for More Angle

Updated 03/20/2025 | Published 03/19/2025

Question:

Leaf spring shackle question: Would a longer shackle increase the shackle angle? I have a 2018 Wolf Pup 16BHS, 3500LB axle. I replaced the springs from the the stock 1750 to 2500. Because of the stiffer spring, they do not flatten the same as the weaker ones causing my shackles to have very little angle just slightly past 90*. I do periodically off-road the trailer and would like more flex. My current shackles are 3inch center to center. Thank you, Bob

Hey Bob, yes a longer shackle would add some additional angle but if yours are already at 3 inches in length there's not much longer you can go. Typically you'd want to go with a longer spring by just a little bit to get that extra angle. I know you just installed new springs though so I am sure that's not what you were wanting to do. But if you get me the length of the springs you just bought I can see if there's a slightly longer option.

Or you could cut off your front and rear hangers and reweld them slightly closer.

Thank you very much for the explanation. I don't mind changing the springs out again, as the are not very expensive. Easier than taking it to a welder. The springs are 25 1/4. Would 25 1/2 make much difference?

@Bob Yes that quarter of an inch would be ideal to get the angle correct.

@Bob Another option would be an equalizer that is slightly longer too.
