Will Curt Hitch C26VV Mess With Kick Sensor On 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander?

Updated 11/04/2025 | Published 02/02/2025

Question:

Hey, I just bought a 2025 Grand Highlander Hybrid Limited which has a kick sensorinch for the rear hatch/lift gate. I would really like to install a hitch for a bike rack or cargo carrier, but will this interfere with the kick sensor? Ive read different things and didnt know if your below bumper hitch would interfere? Any information would be much appreciated, thank you!

Hey Craig, thanks for reaching out. For starters, the Curt # C26VV is th correct fit for the 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander, as long as you do not have the dual exhaust model. We have sold quite a few of these Curt # C26VV hitches for the Grand Highlander now. We have heard back from several of our customers regarding the kick sensor functionality and here is the scoop.

The kick sensor will still work. What happens is the sensor can no longer detect anything directly below the hitch receiver, since it blocks this area. What you can do it wave you foot to either side of the receiver to activate the sensor. So, the sensor will still work with the hitch installed, it will just work a little bit differently.

Hey Craig, how did things go with the Curt hitch on your Grand Highlander Hybrid? Did the kick sensor still respond well when you moved your foot to the side of the receiver? Your update could make it easier for others adding a hitch to the same vehicle.

Honestly just had the OEM installed as I wanted a guarantee for it to work (which is still a learning curve and works 85% of the time first try)

@Craig Thanks for sharing, Craig. Good to know that about the OEM hitch. It can definitely take some getting used to but I am glad to hear the sensor works a majority of the time. This sounds pretty similar to what we see with the aftermarket hitches as well. Feel free to come back and let me know if you ever need anything else!
