Cable Tire Chain Recommendation for a 2021 GMC Sierra 3500 with LT275/65R20 Tires

Published 01/28/2025

Question:

Good day I have a 2021 gmc 3500 HD with LT275/65R20 TIRES. OWNERS MANUAL SAYS NO CHAINS. Is there a cable option for this truck and tire combo that I can have on hand for when state patrol requires chains to be present in truck or if I need them at some point? Go against owners manual recommended use?

Hey Jerry, thanks for reaching out!

I recommend picking up the Titan Chain Cable Tire Chain # TC3031 and keeping them on hand in case you need to prove to State Patrol that you have a traction device. The problem is that since the owner's manual says not to use them, you could potentially damage your truck even with cables like these.

If you live in a place that requires driving during treacherous conditions your best bet is to get winter tires for when you need a better grip. It's definitely more of an expensive solution, but it's the only way to truly help your truck without damaging anything on it.

Do you live in a place that requires chains, or are you going to be passing through a place that requires them?

Yes I live in a place in Washington state that gets snow through the winter. But it's traveling over the passes when I would need cables.

@Jerry Ah, I see. Yeah, I haven't done too much traveling through passes, but I remember traveling to Connecticut in January for my brother's wedding a while back and it got pretty sketchy at times so I can definitely see why chains would be recommended by the State.
