Troubleshooting Optronics Trailer Light Kit TL16RK That Has No Signal To Lights
Updated 01/22/2025 | Published 01/12/2025 >
Question:
I have a regular 20foot flatbed trailer. Pretty old. I purchased your kit and installed it per your instructions but when I hooked the 4 pin to my truck I am not getting any signal to the lights. I am pretty sure that my truck 4pin receiver is working because it works on the box trailer. I am looking for some help in troubleshooting. I am pretty sure that I wired everything properly. I had to use some different wire because it was not long enough. What are some ideas that you can provide to fix my issue. Thanks

Hey John, thanks for reaching out. To have no signal to the lights at all is a little strange since it is a new light kit. The first step here would be to test your 4-way, but it sounds like you have already done that since you say the lights on your box trailer work. If you are sure that works that means the issue must be on the trailer side. You could always try plugging your trailer into a different truck just to see what happens. Sometimes that can be telling.
Next step will be to check your ground and make sure you are grounded to good clean metal with no paint or corrosion. Next check all of your wiring and connections and make sure everything is properly connected. Make sure you used the correct wire gauge which should be 20 gauge. Make sure there is no exposed wire or connections. If this does not resolve the issue your best bet will be to go in with a wire tester and trace each wire from the 4-flat all the way back until you find the issue.

Jesse - Thanks for your suggestions. I am currently working through them one by one. I did go back to the box trailer and found that my turn signals do not work but my lights do work including some of the running lights and the license plate light. I thought maybe it was a fuse so I replaced the turn signal fuse but that did not make any change for my box trailer. My next step is to figure out whether I have an issue with my truck or whether it is a wiring issue. Of course nothing has changed with the flatbed. Thanks.
