Replacement LED Strip Tail Lights Needed For A Modified Trailer

Published 01/09/2025

Question:

Good afternoon. Have a 1997 nissan pathfinder. Have a trailer with regular lights that I have been using for years. Modified the trailer and would like to use light bar 1 1/2 width instead. No marine use. Have a 4 pin wire hardness. Which ones you recommend for replacing the ones I have? Thanks in advance, Quino

Hi Jose,

If you're saying you want to switch both tail lights to LED light strip-style tail lights then I have a few recommendations depending on the length you'd like:

12-5/8" long x 1" wide x 1/2" tall:
Thinline LED Trailer Tail Light - Stop, Tail, Turn - Submersible - 9 Diodes - Clear Lens # STL59RCB
Thinline LED Trailer Tail Light - Stop, Tail, Turn - Submersible - 9 Diodes - Red Lens # STL59RB

20-1/2" long x 1" tall x 3/4" tall:
Fusion LED Combination Tail Light Bar for Trailers Over 80" Wide - Submersible - Red/Clear Lens # STL264RB

20-1/2" long x 1-1/16" tall x 3/4" tall:
ThinLine LED Trailer Tail Light - Stop, Tail, Turn - Submersible - 15 Diodes - Clear Lens # STL64RCB

If you want to send me some pictures of your trailer and/or some dimensions of the mounting space I can make a more specific recommendation for your specific setup.

Thanks for answering. My concern is that I have a new 4 way wiring connector and as I have seen led lights have more cables than a regular light kit. May I use the wiring I have with any of the bars you are recommending?

@Quino You could wire any of these lights to your current 4-pole wiring with no issue. I'll use the # STL59RCB as an example: The red wire will go to the stop/turn signal wire. On a standard bonded 4-wire harness # 16-4B-1 this would be your yellow (left turn) and green (right turn) wires. The black wire will connect to the running light signal which would be the brown wire on the harness. The white wire will connect to the trailer's frame using a ring terminal and self-tapping screw or can be connected to white wire (ground) of the harness if it's been ran out to the lights. Most of the time no one will waste wire running it out so you'll likely need to ground to the frame. On the # STL264RB there's a fourth brown wire that's meant to connect to the reverse light circuit. For this you'd need a 5-pole connector on your tow vehicle and trailer and would have to run an extra wire out to the lights to carry the signal. If you don't want to do that you can just cut the brown wire off or stuff it into the hole for your wiring to save for later. You'll want to use some heat shrink butt connectors like the # DW05744-10 at each connection to protect your wiring from corrosion. Let me know what you think and I'd be happy to answer any other questions.
