Question:
Hello- I have a 2023 GMC Yukon XL Denali without the max tow option that I need to add a brake controller to for a travel trailer we are getting soon. I like the Redarc for a few reasons but am stuck between the Elite and Liberty versions. I am not going to do any off-road travel so leaning toward Liberty but also noticed the Liberty can only pair with a 12v system I’m not sure how to tell what mine is?. In your experience, is one of the two a better option for the Yukon? Thanks for your help! Brian

Hey Brian,
To determine if you have a 12v or 24v system all you have to do is look at the battery. From what I can see your Yukon should have a 12v battery like most other passenger vehicles so the only other notable difference aside from the user-controlled mode for off-roading would be that the Elite # RED44FR is compatible with triple-axle trailers and the Liberty # RED52VR can only go up to tandem axles.
Since you don't plan on off-roading the Liberty # RED52VR is likely going to be the best option for you, unless you have a triple axle trailer that you plan on towing.
You'll want to check under the dash on the driver's side to see if you have the factory wire harness (pictured below) so that you can use a plug-in wire harness like the Curt Custom Wiring Adapter # C51525 to make the installation fast and simple. You'll need to cut the black connector off of this harness and connect it to the splice-in wire harness included with the brake controller using the included butt connectors. You'll match the wires color for color.
If you don't have the factory harness to plug into then you'll need to pick up a 30 amp circuit breaker # PK54530, some 10 gauge wire # 10-1-1 to run from the brake controller to the battery, and some additional butt connectors to extend your wiring # DW05745-10 (12-10 gauge) and # DW05744-10 (16-14 gauge). Your brake light switch wire isn't useable so to get the brake signal to the brake controller you'll need to also install a stop light switch kit # RM79ZR. This will splice to the red wire from the brake controller wire harness.
I've attached a wiring diagram for the Liberty below but if you still have installation questions just let me know below in the comments and I'd be happy to help.

Hey Brian, how did things go with adding the Redarc Liberty brake controller to your Yukon? Did the wiring and stop light switch kit work out as expected? Your update could make it easier for others setting up a similar towing setup.
