Replacement Slam Latch for 1993 Sundowner 3 Horse Trailer

Question:

I have a 1993 Sundowner aluminum 3H GN horse trailer with down head doors, the slam latches need to be replaced, the cut opening is 3 5/8 W, 2 5/8 H, inside space 1 1/8, door thickness inside surface to outside surface 1 1/2, on the width there are vertical suports on each side probably square tubing it looks like I could make the opening 3/8inch wider, and the H measurement has no obstructions, will these latches work?

Hi Loretta; the Bauer Products Manger Door Lock for Horse Trailers # BA95FR is designed for manger doors on horse trailers. I'm assuming your head doors have latches in a different orientation. I suppose you could rotate it to try to make it work but you're going to have to enlarge the opening. This fits 2-3/4" wide x 3-3/4" tall cutouts.

If you rotated it into that space it would become a 2-3/4" tall x 3-3/4" wide requirement. The opening would need to be 1/8" taller and 1/8" wider. Door thickness isn't a major concern since you can add in some wood or other material to make the door thicker where the latch installs.

We have some actual slam latches but they would require even larger openings so this is the closest match. If you don't want to have to try to modify the door, or you don't think it would work well, I would check with a local trailer shop to see what they have available.
