Trailer Is Heavy On One Side - Will Upgrading Tires Prevent Uneven Tire Wear?

Published 12/09/2024

Question:

Forest River Wildwood LA 292 RBSS GAWR 5080 GVWR 10960! =/ 800 lb axle rating. 15X6 jj rims ST225/75R15 D. I went through 5 D Marathons before I upgraded to Caraway 925 E load range on stock jj rims. The right side of the camper is heavier and the Es wear pattern showed overloaded, by wearing on the outside like it was under inflated in normal situation. Would you recommend upgrading to ST225/75R15 F on the 15x6 jj rims 6 bolt

Hello Charles, thanks for reaching out. The load range F tires are going to be more durable and have a thicker ply than the E range tires, so upgrading should allow the tires to last longer and wear more slowly. If the trailer is heavy on one side though, upgrading the tires is not necessarily going to fix this. They may not wear as fast, but you can expect to see the same wear pattern over time. The best way to get around this would be to look at ways to more evenly load the trailer, or at least a way to add more weight to the light side. That would be the only way to permanently resolve the tire wear issue.

We offer 225/75-15 tires up to load range E, but we do not have anything this size in an F range.

@Chuck Nitrogen filled tires are going to hold pressure better than tires filled with standard air. They are less susceptible to changes in PSI. There would really be no benefit in your case to going with nitrogen over air, unless you will be driving thru places with frequent major temperature changes. Especially since compressed air is readily available pretty much anywhere or you can carry it with you for topping off tires. To answer you other question, yes, JJ rims are adequate and in this scenario that is not something you really need to worry about when replacing your tires/wheels.
