Recommended Tire Chains for a 2020 Subaru Forester AWD

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/26/2024

Question:

I'm looking to possibly get tire chains for my daughter's 2020 Subaru Forester (base model), as she will be working at Mammoth this winter. I was wondering: 1. Should I even get them for an AWD Subaru Forester? 2. If so, will it mess with the anti-lock braking or AWD systems if I only put them on the front or back, not both (i.e., should I get one or two pairs)? 3. Any recommendations on which ones would be best for this application? Thanks,

Hey Jim! I looked online and I see quite a few differing opinions on tire chains for a 2020 Subaru Forester. It looks like the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive function checks the boxes on being able to get through snow. What you're going to need to consider is whether or not the road to Mammoth requires them.

If you get a pair you can run just a single set on the front axle and you'll get around decently but ideally you have them installed on all tires to get the best traction all around. You will need a set of class S chains per your user manual.

I recommend the Konig Tire Chains item # TH01594240. These fit both the 225/60-17 and 225/55-18 tire sizes that come with the 2020 Foresters. They are S class chains so you'll be good with the low clearance issues inside your wheel wells. The links are made from manganese nickel alloy steel to ensure they are not only highly durable but also resistant to any type of corrosion, which means they are built to last.

Another perk is how easy they are to install. After you put them around your tires and loop the cables together you only need to drive off and they'll tighten by themselves, which is a much easier and more secure fit than chains that have to be manually tightened.

Hey Jim, how did things go with the Konig tire chains on your daughter's Forester? I'm curious if they gave her the traction she needed for the Mammoth roads. Your update could make it easier for others driving similar AWD vehicles in snowy areas.
