Troubleshooting Trailer Hitch Receiver Contacting Exhaust and Vibration

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/16/2024

Question:

I just successfully installed the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver EH35VR onto my 2021 Highlander XSE. On the first drive after installation I noticed a significant loud vibration sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. This appears to be coming from the exhaust tip touching the hitch frame just above it. There appears to be a 0.5inch of clearance between the two, but the exhaust vibrates just enough to hit the hitch frame. I dont see any issues with the exhaust or hitch. Do you have a recommended solution for this? I appreciate any help you can provide.

This is a all to common issue we do run into from time to time Nick. First I would look over the exhaust to see if it can be flexed in such away to gain more clearance near the receiver but as to not cause any issue with anywhere else on the vehicle. You may also be able to loosen the mounting hardware for the receiver and push it away from the exhaust to gain enough clearance as to eliminate the vibration.

Hey Nick, how did things turn out after you adjusted the exhaust or shifted the hitch for more clearance on your Highlander? Did that take care of the vibration noise you were hearing? Your update could make it easier for others who run into the same issue.
