Entire Suspension Set Up For Tandem 3" Diameter Axles

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/11/2024

Question:

I have a 1970 4 horse tandem axle gooseneck trailer built on a stock carrier frame. The axles are 3.0 diameter - the leaf springs are 2.0 wide and it appears to be 29 1/2 from the center hole on the outside brackets to the hole on the center bracket. Are you able to recommend a kit to replace bolts, equalizer, and springs? I have no idea what the axles were originally rated for, it has been repainted many times.

Hello Francis.

Thanks for sending in the pictures. With the axle being 3" diameter tells me that they are 5,200-7,000 lbs. I have a solution for you, but you probably aren't going to get too excited about it. Your best bet is to replace everything, and it's because of the leaf springs. The only 2" wide leaf springs we carry are all slipper springs. Here is the set up I would do:

First you want to start with the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit # AP233-H248, this kit is going to get you new hangers for 1 3/4" leaf springs , equalizers, shackle straps, shackle bolts, and locknuts.

For the leaf springs you are going to need qty: (4) of the 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb Trailer Axles - 26" Long # TRU92FR.

It is always recommended to use new u-bolts once they are removed due to them stretching over time. Since you have (2) axles you will need qty: (2) of the U-Bolt Kit for Mounting 5,200-lb to 7,000-lb, Round Trailer Axles - 7" Long U-Bolts # APUBR-8.

We have a great help article that I attached on trailer suspension that will help guide you with the install. There isn't a standard with how trailer suspension parts need to be installed, with the new set up you will be able to move the front and rear hangers to be able to make the shorter leaf springs work.

Hey Francis, how did the new hanger kit and leaf springs work out on your gooseneck trailer? Were the shorter springs easy to line up after moving the hangers? Your update could make it easier for others restoring older trailers like yours.
