Recommended Brake Controller for a 2017 Coachman Pursuit BH33

Published 11/08/2024

Question:

Need help to install a brake controller for my 2017 Coachman Pursuit BH33. the RV does have a 7pin plug, it does work as we tested all lights on our new car utility trailer which has 2 axels. the only thing that does not work is the Brake, so we checked our RV and does not have the gain mechanism. We were recommended to use the Curt bluetooth but was told that it will not work with RV. is this true? 1. what is the recommended solution that you have and what part number? 2. what wire am I supposed to look for? I am no engineer, unfortunately but I want to cut cost of me doing it myself.

Hey Dj. Not sure what you mean when you say you're missing the gain mechanism. Gain's a setting for adjusting the sensitivity of your trailer's brakes. You adjust gain through your brake controller not the RV. If you're 7-way is functional enough for the Curt Echo item # C51180 then that port will work with a traditional brake controller.

Using a Curt Echo item # C51180 on a RV has had mixed results. It is ok'd to be used on your class A 2017 Coachman Pursuit BH33 but signal issues in the past would have me steering you away from this choice.

Since your RV has the brake controller port, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness item # TK42UR. This is a proportional brake controller that stops your trailer with the same amount of force your RV is stopping or slowing in. Included with the controller is the plug in adapter you will need for a quick install.

Feel free to email me directly or comment below with additional questions or concerns. No one in the office has heard of a gain mechanism but it sounds like you're referring to a brake controller. A brake controller would not come with your Coachman's factory tow package and with everything else you have described, it sounds like the item # TK42UR is exactly what you'll need to control your trailer's brakes.

Hi Jerred To clarify, yes, the "Gain's setting for adjusting the sensitivity of your trailer's brakes." which I have on my Ram truck. I agree with your statement on that bluethooth so i want to pivot to your recommendation. is it pretty straight forward to install? Im out on an errand and would appreciate if you can suggest any video on this? thank you! DJ

@DjG I do not have a video but your 2017 Coachman Pursuit Class A Motorhome is built on the Ford F-53 chassis. The brake controller port will be located near the emergency brake pedal release, to the left hand side of the steering column. Once you find this you'll just need to plug in the adapter and find a suitable location to mount the actual controller. Super easy install!
