Troubleshooting Fitment Of A Hub-Centric Wheel On A Lug-Centric Trailer Hub

Updated 12/03/2024 | Published 10/23/2024

Question:

I just got a very old trailer and the lugnut/wheel mating does not look correct. I was hoping you could give me some information on this and maybe point me in the direction of the correct lugnut. I believe the thread is 1/2-20. The lugnuts I believe are ball/spherical and the hex on the lugnut is 13/16. The hex is recessing into the pocket for the mating surface on the wheel side creating small burrs when tightened. Please let me know if you can help! Thank you!

Hey Stephen,

Following up from the email chain with your pictures here as well. It looks like you have a hub-centric wheel instead of a lug-centric wheel. Your options to fix this issue would be to use a spacer (adapter to fill in the gap in the bore hole), swap out the hub fit the bore hole of the wheel, or swap out the wheel to a lug-centric one. Let me know what you'd like to do and I can come up with some options for you.

I emailed a response; should I respond here instead? I would assume the spacer is the cheapest and easiest option so would like to know what the purchase for that. If you have any thoughts regarding the spacer vs the wheel or hub, I would appreciate it. If you let me know what measurements you need I can get you that information.

@StephenB That's something we unfortunately don't offer but you can reach out to a local tire and wheel shop to see if they can point you in the right direction. We can only offer new wheels that are lug-centered instead. If you have to switch out the wheels let me know the tire size and if you have any preferences on the wheel type, color, design.

@KevinC Thank you! I have ST225/75R15 tires. I do not have any preference on type, color, or design. It is a dual axle trailer and I believe they are 3500 lb axles so I would like their load rating to match if possible. The main things I am looking for are reliability and cost.

@Stephen There should be a load range listed on the sidewalls of your tires that's depicted as a letter. The options we offer for a 15" wheel range from load range C to load range E. Are you wanting to replace both the tires and wheels or are you going to have the tires mounted to the new wheels?
