What is Needed to Add 7-Way to 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee With 4-Way

Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 10/03/2024

Question:

I have a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, it did not come with the trailer package, a Curt hitch was installed, without lights. I installed a CURT 56426 Vehicle-Side Custom 4-Pin Trailer Wiring Harness on it, but some trailers Ill tow will have a 7 pin. I see many 4 pin to 7 pin options, will any of these work on mine? I know with the 4 pin installation it isnt like the old days, theyre much different. I wasnt sure if all the 7 pin connections could be made. I know the standard lights will, but unsure about the connections to wire.

Hey Tim,

You can for sure add a 7-way to your 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee that already has the Curt T-Connector 4-Way # C62VR on it. Are you looking to utilize the electric brakes on your trailer's 7-way? If not you can just use an adapter, the Hopkins Plug-In Trailer Connector Adapter - 4-Way Flat to 7-Blade # HM54RV.

This will just give your trailer the same functions as the 4-way, so no electric brakes or 12 volt auxiliary power. However, if you did want the electric brakes and 12 volt power, you'll need something different:

- Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7

With this you'll plug your 4-way into the 7-way that comes with the # ETBC7, but this kit also gives you the wiring, circuit breakers, and rest of the hardware needed for installation.

Hey Tim, how did things go adding the 7-way to your Grand Cherokee with the Curt wiring harness? Did the adapter or the full brake controller kit end up giving you the setup you needed? Your update could make it easier for others working through the same wiring options.
