Can I Add Brakes To A Vintage 1962 Tandem Axle Boat Trailer

Updated 01/05/2026 | Published 09/21/2024

Question:

Hi, I have a vintage 2 axel boat trailer built in 1962, my 20 boat and trailer weight about 5000 lbs. I was wondering what type of measurements I need to take to upgrade, it has no brakes at this time. Thanks

Hello Alan, it may be possible to add brakes to your trailer. Since it will be in the water, adding hydraulic drum brakes will be the best option.

First you will need to make sure your axle has a brake flange welded to the base of the spindle. If no brake flange is present, they can be welded on, or you can replace the axle entirely.

If you do have a brake flange, brake assemblies can be bolted up. I will need to know your axle weight capacity, as well as the inner bearing size, outer bearing size, and seal size from your current hubs. This way we can be sure the new hubs will fit the spindle. The best way to determine this is to pull a hub and remove the bearings. Each bearing will have a number stamped on the edge that we can use. If no number is present you can measure the ID with a micrometer.

From there you will need to add a brake line kit, and surge brake actuator like the Dexter # DX56FR to the tongue. Take a look at the article I linked below. It will go over in more detail how to add brakes to a trailer. If you can let me know your axle capacity, bearing sizes and seal size I am happy to look into it and see if we have anything for you. I will tell you up front that a lot of older trailers use parts that are now obsolete, so you may be looking at a full axle replacement. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hey Alan, were you able to get the bearing and seal sizes from your trailer hubs? Once you have those details, we can narrow down the right hydraulic brake setup for your vintage trailer. Let me know what you find—I’m happy to help confirm the best fit.

Hi Jesse, Yes I got the brakes all done and they work great! Since then I acquired a new boat and may add brakes to it this summer. I will get the info off the hubs and let you know. Thanks

@AlanW Nice glad to hear the brakes worked out! We should definitely have the parts for the new trailer too. You know where to find me when the time comes!
