Question:
Hello I have a 2007 tandem axle boat mate trailer for my wake boat. It currently has surge brakes that pretty much don’t work. Looking to upgrade and go to a hydraulic unit like the hydrastar. Do I have to replace all my brake components or just add the hydrastar and remove my old actuator? Trying to figure out all parts needed to do the conversion thanks Tyler

Hey Tyler,
You can definitely swap out the surge brake actuator for an electric-over-hydraulic actuator with minimal alteration to your setup. Disc and drum assemblies run at different psi levels so you'll need the Hydrastar # HBA-10 if you have drum brakes or the # HBA16 if you have disc brake assemblies. You can lockout the actuator keep using the coupler if you want or swap it for a standard coupler if you'd like. If you don't have a junction box, 7-way, and breakaway battery/switch then you can get kits # HS381-9067 (disc) or # HS381-9065 (drum). Finally you'll just need a brake controller that's compatible with electric-over-hydraulic actuators.
These actuators can't be submerged in water, but can withstand the elements so you'll need to mount it close to the coupler to help prevent it from being dunked when launching or recovering the boat.

Hey Tyler, how did the switch to the Hydrastar setup go on your boat trailer? Were you able to get the actuator mounted in a spot that stays clear of the water when launching? Your update could make it easier for others planning the same upgrade.
