Can Wheel Studs Be Installed in Trailer Hub That Uses Wheel Bolts
Updated 05/20/2014 | Published 05/18/2014 >
Question:
Hi. Looking at new bolts For my trailer wheels. Can I use the double male bolts and then use nuts safely or use longer bolts. How do the drive in bolts work?

Expert Reply:
If your current hubs use lug bolts as opposed to lug nuts, you'll need to continue to use lug bolts.
If you're wanting to switch to a hub that uses studs and lug nuts, it might be possible. If you could reply with the lug bolt pattern (number of lugs and diameter of bolt circle) and provide the reference numbers from your inner and outer bearings and inner diameter of your grease seal, I might be able to find you a replacement hub that uses studs and lug nuts. If you cannot read the reference numbers, you can use a digital caliper to measure the surfaces on the spindle where the inner and outer bearings and the grease seal ride. A ruler or tape measure will not provide an accurate enough measurement.
I'll link you to a help article that explains how to determine your wheel bolt pattern.
