Can You Use Wheels With 4.27 Pilot With 6k Axle

Updated 01/27/2026 | Published 08/06/2024

Question:

I bought 3 6000lb dexter axles and I find the pilot diameter for the wheels is about 3.625. Can I use wheels with a 4.27 pilot or do I need the 3.625 pilot diameter wheels? thanks, brett

Hello Brett,

You can use wheels with a 4.27 pilot diameter like the Rambler ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 15" Vesper Black Mod Wheel # TA98GR with your 6k axles without issue.

Hey Brett, how did the wheels with the 4.27 pilot diameter work out on your 6k Dexter axles? Knowing how they fit could help others sorting out the same size question.

@RobinH The seem to work okay. The wheels hang on the studs. Haven't had it fully loaded yet but I don't expect any problems these are only 5200lb axles.

@BrettR They are 6000lb axles though the trailer is only licensed for 15500lbs gross.
