Trailer Hitch And Bike Rack Recommendation For A 2020 Mazda CX-9

Updated 08/07/2024 | Published 08/05/2024

Question:

I am interested in buying a hitch bike rack for my 2020 Mazda CX 9. It needs to accommodate 4 adult bikes. This is my first bike rack purchase so I am learning as I go. I want something that will not add too much length to my vehicle when parked and I am curious of options that offer security for bikes left mounted when we are away for an extended period of time - like overnight. I do not have a hitch installed yet. I have no plans to actually tow anything. What size hitch do you recommend? Is it possible I can buy a bike rack that would fit another car in the future if its another SUV? Based on my limited knowledge I was looking at the Thule TH934XTR, but I am looking for some advice from the experts. Thank you.

Hey Phil, you came to the right place, and I am happy to help.

Firstly, as far as the trailer hitch for your 2020 Mazda CX-9, I recommend the etrailer Class 3 Hitch # e87AR. This has a 2" receiver which is very common. This means you will have a lot of great bike rack options available to you. Also, the 2" receiver is standard, and if you do get another vehicle down the line, you can install a new hitch and use the same bike rack. Just keep in mind that the 2" receiver is used mainly on trucks and SUVs, while sedans may use the smaller 1-1/4" receiver. So this may be something to keep in mind if/when you start looking at a new vehicle.

For the bike rack, there are several great options available to you. My recommendation is the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Bike Rack # HR1400Z. There are a few features that I think you will like. It can hold 4 bikes weighing up to 50 lbs apiece so it will work great for adult bikes.

The rack is also fully lockable. The ratcheting hooks are lockable, so the bikes cannot be removed from the rack without a key. It also has a hitch lock, so the rack cannot be removed from the car without a key. If you plan on leaving bikes on it overnight, you could even use a cable bike lock for even more security, although the rack is quite secure on its own.

Also, the rack can tilt away from the vehicle for better hatch access. It also folds up towards the vehicle for storage. The rack is pretty compact when folded. It will stick out 46" from the back of the car when folded down, and it will stick out only 16-1/4" when folded up. Also, this rack can be converted into a 2-bike rack if needed.

The # TH934XTR rack you mentioned is a solid option, but the hanging style racks are not lockable, and they are much less sturdy than a platform style rack.

We have a few review videos for the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Bike Rack # HR1400Z and you will find links to the video pages below. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any more questions.
