Can 50A Surge Protector Be Used to Connect and Protect a 30A Camper to 50A Service

Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 08/01/2024

Question:

Hi, we are a bit different scenario. We have a 50 amp surge protector from our old 5th wheel. Can I plug that into a 50 amp outlet and then hook a 50 to 30 amp extension and then hook my 30 amp trailer cord to it? It sounds like a daisy chain from h*ll but I didn’t really want to buy another surge protector. Thank you in advance.

Hey Michelle, thanks for reaching out!

While that will technically work, the problem is that the surge protector is for 50 amps so it won't really do your 30 amp setup any good as it won't trip until that 50 amps is exceeded.

For your application I recommend using the Power Watchdog Surge Protector with Bluetooth # HU97FR so it's accurately rated to protect your camper, plus if the unit ever does experience a surge you can replace the module with part # HU48FR and we have a video showing how to do this which I'm linking for you.

I know replacing your surge protector isn't the cheapest thing, but without one that has the correct rating you run the risk of damaging appliances that would cost more than the surge protector alone, so in the long run it's worth the investment.

Hey Michelle, how did things go with the Power Watchdog surge protector for your 30 amp setup? Did it give you the protection and peace of mind you were hoping for? Your update could make it easier for others deciding between reusing old gear or getting the right match.
