30 Amp Surge Protector With Replaceable Module

Updated 04/14/2026 | Published 04/12/2026

Question:

Can you, please help me choose a 30a dogbone-style surge suppressor for my travel trailer. There are just too many choices! I would preffer one with a replaceable surge MOV card because I know they get used up. Thank you.

Hey Michael! Since you were looking at the SoftStartRV Soft Start # SSR54FR are you wanting that built in as well? The Active Controls ActiveStart Plug-In Soft Start for RVs # AS94FR is a soft start and surge protector all in one. If you aren't looking for the soft start functionality, I recommend the Portable Power Watchdog Surge Protector # HU67FR.

The Watchdog features an automatic shutoff for additional protection. If voltage gets too low or too high it will cut power to keep everything protected, then restore power once it is stable again. You can connect to and monitor both via their apps, and both have replaceable modules.

What kind of trailer do you have?

Thanks for the advice! 2025 Rockwood 2205s. I would prefer to hardwire the soft start in the A/C. I see there is another version of that same brand of protector. I assume it has the same protection just without the auto shut off for power irregularities that your suggestion has? Again, thanks for helping me out here.

@Michaelf yes, the # HU97FR is the most basic version with surge protection only. You can still swap out the module if it burns out. I'm not sure how much camping you do, but if you're at a lot of different campsites the emergency shutoff is a huge help and can prevent a lot of problems. If you're camping occasionally then I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Michael, I purchased the Portable Power Watchdog Surge Protector with Bluetooth and Emergency Shut Down and it has protected my camper a couple of times due to bad camp ground electricity. I also got with the great folks at Watchdog and purchased the replaceable module. It keeps us camping should the module go out so I don't have to send the surge protector in for servicing. (covered by warranty). Either way you go don't camp without some quality surge protector. It could be a costly mistake. Dan C.

I have been using the 30 amp Watchdog surge protector for about 3 years. Great piece of gear. I have 2 AC units on my Momentum 25G toy hauler and run them both on 30 amps, the soft starts are wired directly to the AC units. No issues. The other really great thing about the surge protector is that it has an emergency shut down if something happens, either a surge or low voltage. Additionally, you can monitor the amps and voltage from your phone. I even have my wife trained to not run the AC, microwave, coffeemaker, and hair dryer at the same time without checking the amps, before operating it. Ha! This also came in really handy when we were at the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Albuquerque camping on the RV lot. They provided power, supposedly 30 amp, but you really didn't want it to exceed 22-25 amps or you would trip out your whole row of RVs. Never was an issue. Don C

We have been using the 30 amp Portable Power Watchdog Surge Protector with Bluetooth and Emergency Shut Down for 3 years averaging 9 months continuous use each year. It has done it’s job protecting our camper with no problems, catching overloads and low voltage as it should. I really like it connected to my iPhone allowing me to see if a problem arises.
