Question:
Good Afternoon. Couple of random questions for this newbie. Our RV is 6 years old and we just bought it. Had it out on one trip….and remain married…so we must have done OK. As far as the scissor stabilizers, on my RV, when should I consider replacing them? The screws are pretty rusty. If I replace the stabilizers…should I consider using jack stands instead? Is there any benefit of one over the other? If I replace the stabilizers….are there any brands that I need to stay away from? stabilizers and / or jack stands Should we consider support stands jack stands for our one slide out? Thanks

Hi Jody; scissor jacks like the # TJSCHD-24-4 will last a really long time but it does depend on use, weather, etc. If the screws are rusty and the rest of the jack looks fine I wouldn't worry about it. More than likely it is surface rust and the screws aren't compromised but you could always replace them just to be safe.
If the jacks are really rusty it wouldn't hurt to replace them, and I would use the same kind of scissor jacks unless you want to move to electric leveling like the # LC298707. Scissor jacks are a pretty basic part so any known brand will be fine.
If you want to add supports to your slide out that will help with stabilization. However, I recommend the JT's Strong Arm Jack Stabilizer Kit for Travel Trailers # LC191025. These solidify the scissor jacks to reduce unwanted movement. You can see where these were installed on my trailer below and they work really well. It is rock solid when kids are running around in the trailer.
If you want to add the slide out stabilizers you can choose from the following based on height:
-Ultra-Fab Slide-Out Supports for Motor Homes - 16" to 28" - Qty 2 # UF19-960001
-Ultra-Fab Slide-Out Supports for Motor Homes - 21" to 37" - Qty 2 # UF19-960002
-Ultra-Fab Slide-Out Supports for Motor Homes - 26" to 47" - Qty 2 # UF19-960003
