Selecting The Right Weight Distribution Hitch For a 2013 Toyota Highlander

Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 07/19/2024

Question:

We have a 2013 Toyota Highlander Limited with the tow package, rated at 500/5000 tongue/trailer capacity. We've installed the draw-site max e-loader hitch (75726) which has a 750lb tongue weight rating when used with a WDH. I don't plan on exceeding the 500lb tongue weight, but I still have a question about a WDH. In terms of choosing a WDH, can/should we use a 600/6000 tongue/trailer capacity WDH, or can/should we use an 800/8000 tongue/trailer capacity WDH? I've read that you shouldn't grossly "over-spec" the WDH - but I'm not sure which is more important - should the WDH be "under" the spec of the hitch in order to not damage things (i.e., the 600), or should it be close to spec of the hitch (the 800) in order to do its job properly? Thanks for any insight you might have!

It is more important for the weight distribution hitch to reflect the weight of the trailer than the Receiver # 75726 on your 2013 Toyota Highlander. Both the 600/6000LB # FA92-00-0600 and 800/8000LB # FA92-00-0800 weight distribution hitches are going to be safe to use with your receiver as long as you do not exceed the towing capacity of your Highlander or the receiver.

The 600/6000LB # FA92-00-0600 is rated for trailers with a tongue weight of 250-600lbs while the 800/8000LB # FA92-00-0800 is rated for a tongue weight of 400-800lbs. I would select the option which is closest to being in the middle of your trailers tongue weight.

Hey, how did things go choosing between the 600/6000 and 800/8000 weight distribution hitches for your Highlander? Did the one you picked balance the trailer the way you hoped? Your update could make it easier for others setting up a similar tow setup.
