How Tight Should The Shackle Bolts And Nuts Be Tightened?
Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 07/12/2024 >
Question:
Hello. I bought trailer open eye slipper springs. My question is how tight do I make the shackle bolts? Completely tight? Or just snug so there is a little movement so the spring doesnt bind in the shackles? Thanks

Hello Paul, great question. The shackle bolts cannot be tightened too much. There is no torque rating for these bolts because tightening them too much can cause the suspension to bind up. The nuts are to be tightened until the knurled portion of the bolt pulls completely into the shackle strap and the bolt head is ran all the way down to the shackle strap and you have at least 2 threads extending past the face of the nut.

Hey Paul, how did things go tightening the shackle bolts on your slipper springs? Did the method of pulling the knurled portion into the shackle strap work smoothly for you? Your experience could help others setting up the same suspension.
