Replacement Dexter/Titan/Kodiak Disc Brake Assembly And Actuator For A Tandem Axle Trailer

Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 06/24/2024

Question:

Do you have any tandem Dexter axle 8k Kodiak/Dexter hydraulic disc brake kits with the pump. Im assuming Dexter bought Kodiak and they are the same company now. I have a Kodiak/Titan system on my tandem 10K trailer now that is 12 years old and has held up great to very heavy loads. I dont think I would trust any other brand. Especially after seeing the review where a guy had all the studs break off.

Hey David,

Yes, Dexter acquired Kodiak back in 2018 and has rebranded a lot of their components. Are you looking for an electric-over-hydraulic actuator, like the Dexter BrakeRite # DX82KR, or are you wanting a surge brake actuator like the Dexter Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout # T4747220?

For the Kodiak disc brake assembly we offer kits with slip on rotors or hub/rotor and either 5/8" studs or 9/16" studs with an 8 on 6-1/2 bolt pattern. We'll also want to check your bearings and grease seal to ensure fitment. If the part numbers have worn off you can measure points B, C, and D with a caliper # PTW80157. Let me know what you have and I'd be happy to find the right fit.

Hey David, did you get a chance to check your bearings and seal measurements for the Dexter or Kodiak disc brake setup? Once you have those details, I can help narrow down the best kit for your tandem trailer. Let me know what you find so we can get you the right fit.

@SamuelC I was able to find and replace the bearings. Another issue I also ran across with those brakes is the caliper design changed. When ALKO was bought by Dexter the caipers being sold by Kodiak no longer fit the ALKO axles. The body of the current generation of Kodiak calipers actually rubs on the inside of the wheels. I actually had to take a grinder to my caliper body to create some clearance so the cliper would not rub. The part number for the caliper never changed but the caliper itself did changed where the body of the caliper now extends a little further towards the wheel. I assume on the Dexter 10K and probably 12K axles that dominate the market it is probably an ideal fit. But for those with ALKO axles it does not fit any longer without being modified.

@DavidP Weird. I know now-a-days, anything Al-Ko pretty much needs to be taken off and replaced, as there are virtually no replacement parts left.
