Question:
Hi - I have a Hyundai Tucson plug with the OEM hitch which is 1 1/4 and most likely class 1 no doc. on it. Im interested in a flat hitch cargo carrier, especially one with a tilt and folding ability. I like your 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier Item e98874 but it is only for 2. If I buy a 1 1/4 to 2 hitch adapter can I use that? And do you sell adapters? Thank you!

Hi Chris,
Yes, technically you can use the etrailer Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # e98874 in a 1-1/4" Class 1 hitch with the Hitch Adapter 1-1/4" to 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver # HTAD and Hitch Lock # e98879.
That said, using an adapter like this will reduce the capacity of your hitch by 50 percent. Most Class 1 hitches have a tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs, so an adapter will cut that to 100 lbs. Since the carrier weighs 48 lbs, that leaves just 52 lbs of carrying capacity.
That's quite a drop, so I would instead consider using a cargo carrier that's rated for use with a Class 1 hitch, either the Curt Cargo Carrier # C18110 or # C18145.
While neither of these are as large, they weigh 30 lbs, so assuming your hitch has the 200 lb tongue weight capacity, you're still left with 170 lb of cargo carrying capacity.
