Question:

I purchased this hitch from etrailer two years ago and its a great trailer hitch. We use it all the time. Im looking to get a class II adapter to use with this hitch so we can connect accessories that use a class II connection. We have a cargo tray that we can use on the car, but it has a class II connection. The one thing we have noticed is the pin location on the hitch is shallow and I have had to modify a few different things to work with the hitch. The adapter I purchased locally did not work due to the shallowness of the receiver. Can you make a recommendation on a class II adapter that will work with this hitch?

The issue is not exactly the depth of the receiver but the stop that is punched into it, see picture. This stop does not allow the use of Class II accessories as a safety precaution to keep users from overloading a Class I trailer hitch.

I can sell you an adapter that will work with the Class I hitch, # HTAD, but it will expand the receiver from a 1-1/4 inch to a 2 inch and you still would not be able to use the Class II accessories. Also, the use of an adapter will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent. On hitch # 24756 that means the tongue weight capacity of the hitch will be reduced from 200 pounds to 100 pounds.

Some customers have removed that stop in the receiver thinking it was installed in error. But doing this will void the hitch warranty. The best solution to avoid warranty issues and damage to the hitch or vehicle is to use a cargo carrier that is Class I rated such as Pro Series carrier # 6500.
