Bike Rack Recommendation for a Carbon Fiber Bike Without Damaging the Frame
Published 05/07/2014 >
Question:
Will zip tying foam pipe insulation tubing onto the hooks and also not cranking down on the ratching too tightly prevent up/down concussion during travel on uneven roads and prevent damage? Ive looked and talked to Swagman Rep and read others saying what I say above is safe...I really need your research on this...please help with your expert advise..I know youve helped others..would be a credit to your customer service and purchasing confidence for consumers. I can wait up to one week if you need time for research. Thanks very much..

The best option for a hitch mounted bike rack for your carbon fiber frame bike would be to use a wheel mount bike rack. This style of bike rack secures the bikes using a combination of wheel hoops and a ratcheting hook over the front tire, therefore eliminating contact with the bike frame.
For your carbon fiber bike I recommend the Swagman Semi # S64686. Using this bike carrier will eliminate any hook placement or securing device from contacting the frame of your bike. This bike rack has many similar features to the Swagman XTC-2 that you reference. It is compatible with both 1-1/4 inch and 2 inch hitches, and includes an combination hitch lock and cable lock.
If you choose to go with the Swagman XTC-2 # S64670, even with the additional padding that you mentioned modifications that you stated there may be potential for frame damage. If the bike is not properly secured due to your padding modifications, there is potential for the bike to come loose during transport. Where as the wheel hooks on the # S64686 secure the bike using the front tire, and there is no contact with the bike frame, the bike is secure and the need for additional padding is eliminated.
I have included a helpful article for you that highlights the different styles of bike racks.
