Question:

Im really interested in this Ignik fire pit GN24FR. I have a Class B van. Extra space is valuable so this unit would free up a bit of room. My question has to do with the propane tank. I dont have room for even a five-gallon canister and even if I did have room, Ive been told canisters like that need to be outside. My van has a quick connect to my onboard propane tank. But it is regulated, and I know this items hose has its own regulator. This makes me think it wont work with my vans quick connect. And of course, since. your hose also allows you to turn the firepit on and off, my only control would be a little knob up at the quick connect which would be several feet away. I would be nervous about turning that one to get gas and then walking up the firepit with many seconds of gas fumes floating around. Your thoughts on this? Thanks, Mark

It sounds like you are on the right track with your thinking here Mark. The Ignik FireCan Portable Propane Fire Pit # GN24FR really is intended to be used with a propane tank. You are right that it will not work with the regulated propane coming from your vans supply. You may be able to hook the two together but the flame in the fire pit would be weak/intermittent at best. It likely would not work at all.

That does still leave the issue of the on/off for the firepit being several feet away and your concerns on that front are definitely valid. If something were to go wrong and it needed to be shut off immediately it is certainly something to be aware of. Also when you are starting the fire pit it would allow gas to build up for several seconds before it is lit. Hopefully the fire pit is being used in an open well ventilated area which would minimize gas buildup. As long as you were to light the firepit within a few seconds or as quickly as possible this would not be a major issue. Just like lighting a gas grill at home, as long as you open the lid and let it ventilate as soon as you turn the gas on there should be no unwanted combustion.

I know you said you are limited on space, but in order to use the Ignik FireCan # GN24FR your best bet really is to use a 5 lb tank or a 10 lb tank. A full 5 lb tank is only about 15 lbs so not too much added weight. You could use the small green disposable tanks, which might be easier to store, but you would need to carry a few of them in order to use the firepit for more than an hour or two. A full 5 gallon tank should fuel the firepit for about 10 hours.

If you do use a 5lb or 10lb tank I recommend using the Ignik Gas Growler Deluxe Refillable Propane Tank # GN64FR. This is a standard size 5 lb tank which is safe to store in your vehicle or camper. It could also be mounted outside the camper if needed. We have a small pop-up camper we use here and we have a 5 lb tank like the # mounted right near the passenger side fender. It is also very common to see tanks mounted on the tongue of the trailer. So there may be more than one potential location you could mount and store a tank.
